Once 24 hours have passed, an Instagram story is gone for everyone except the person who posted it. Instagram has no button that brings back someone else's expired story. What you can still see depends on whether the owner saved it, and on whether anyone kept a copy while it was live.
What Instagram itself keeps
Your own stories stay in your story archive if archiving is switched on (Profile, menu, Archive). You can watch them there, download them or add them to a highlight.
Other people's stories are only visible later if the owner put them into a highlight. Highlights sit under the bio and do not expire. If a story is not in a highlight, Instagram shows it to nobody but the owner after 24 hours.
What does not work
- Websites that promise to show "any expired story". They can only show what is still live or what someone saved earlier.
- Asking Instagram support. Expired stories of other accounts are not handed out.
- Apps that want your Instagram password. You risk your account, and they still cannot reach stories that are gone.
Keeping a copy while the story is live
The only way to see a story later is to save it during its 24 hours. For a single story you can take a screen recording. If you follow a brand, a creator or a competitor and want every story, that is too much manual work.

How fast stories are saved
Over the last 30 days up to 10 Oct 2026, 91% of Instagram stories of watched profiles were saved within 35 minutes of posting. The median was 18 minutes. 4% of all stories disappeared before 23 hours, which means the owner deleted them early. Those are saved too, as long as they were online at one of our checks.
Limits you should know
- Only public profiles. Private accounts are not fetched.
- Only stories posted after you started watching the profile. Older stories cannot be recovered.
- A story that is deleted within a few minutes can fall between two checks.
- Watching profiles needs a subscription (Basic 3, Premium 10, Ultra 50 profiles). There is no free trial.

Can I see an Instagram story after 24 hours without the app?
Only if the owner added it to a highlight. Otherwise it is only in the owner's archive.
Does the person see that I watched the saved story?
No. A saved copy in SocialChecker is not an Instagram view, so it does not show up in the viewer list.
Can I recover a story from last week?
Only if it was saved while it was live, for example because the profile was already being watched. SocialChecker cannot fetch stories that expired before you added the profile.
